Smith Bits, a business unit of Smith International, holds more drill bit performance records than any other manufacturer.

The Challenge

Smith Bits had already implemented Oracle Manufacturing for MRP
(Manufacturing Resource Planning) and Pro/ENGINEER for CAD (Computer
Aided Design), but a three-year effort to implement a Sherpa PDM (product
data management) system failed. Smith Bits needed a product lifecycle
management system and collaboration tool that they could rapidly implement
themselves by taking full ownership and claiming responsibility from the outset.

Smith Bits assigned a core team of five people to implement eMatrix™
in addition to fulfilling their regular job duties. Using a minimum of
consulting hours, the team implemented the entire eMatrix system
themselves.
