Great companies begin with great engineering. Its invention of the first mechanical cash register in 1884 was the engineering feat that put the National Cash Register Company (NCR) on the map. Over 115 years later, the company continues to serve consumers’ needs where it counts most — where the transaction actually takes place.

The Challenge

Today, engineering remains the original source for information that drives many organizations within NCR. However, Dave Boscia, NCR’s IT manager of engineering systems in Columbia, South Carolina, wants to do more than simply provide engineering information to engineers. Boscia often searches for opportunities to leverage engineering success in other areas.

In 1997, NCR first introduced the eMatrix Internet business collaboration solution to the engineering services at the company’s Waterloo office to replace proprietary systems that were not Y2K-compliant. Soon, more than 200 people from NCR’s Financial Solutions Group were using the eMatrix solution to share and manage product lifecycle information.
