With at least 30% of troops exposed to potential brain-injuring explosions, it has become critical to better protect U.S. Army personnel from explosions during combat by investigating new liner materials and designs for the standard issue Advanced Combat Helmet.

Abaqus FEA was used for the entire process: from modeling the geometry to running nonlinear and multiphysics the simulation, to post-processing the results. The CONWEP air blast capability in Abaqus was used to reduce computation times by eliminating consideration of the blast media from the analysis.
Vorteile
Realistic simulation in this instance is a clear alternative to live test subjects in blast analyses, as well as serving as the basis to develop future simulations of more complex numerical helmet, liner, and head models.
