Morel is a family business which was founded in 1880 and is entirely independent both financially and strategically. The company is located in France in Morbier (Jura) and is managed by Mr Jérôme Morel. This eyeglasses manufacturer’s specificity is that it creates, manufactures and markets its own brands, whereas most of its competitors design and manufacture products under license.
The Challenge
The company achieved a turnover of 32 million euros in 2006 of which 75% for export, and its 220 employees produce on average 2,000 frames per day in France.
Dassault Systemes Response
The first step was to use 3D CAD/CAM with Euclid for complex surfaces, and then we purchased CATIA Machinist for machining,” explains Nicolas Raimondi, the Engineering Dept. Manager. In 1999, as the Engineering Dept. wished to continue to improve the design/manufacturing processes, it carried out a benchmark on several software publishers: Dassault Systèmes was the winner with CATIA V5 after submitting exhaustive design/manufacturing specifications. The CATIA V5 software also appeared to be more user-friendly, efficient and reactive.
Benefits
Previously, we needed around two weeks to make a prototype, today we make it in less than 5 days. Moreover, the renewal time of our ranges and our designers’ creativity compel us to use methods and tools which meet our ambitions.”
